Uninsured Drivers
When you are involved in a car accident and the driver that caused the accident is uninsured it is often difficult to recover compensation for your losses. Unfortunately, many Minnesota drivers do not carry the mandatory auto liability insurance coverage that MN state law requires. In Minnesota the owner of a motor vehicle is required to carry liability insurance to cover damages if the driver of that vehicle causes an accident. We often see negligent drivers who failed to buy auto insurance or failed to pay their premiums and let their coverage lapse. This leaves the people they injure left with unpaid medical bills, car repairs, lost wages and permanent injuries.
If you are the victim of an accident involving a Minnesota uninsured driver and you have your own auto insurance you will have what is referred to as “Uninsured Motorist” coverage or “UM” insurance coverage. This is special insurance that is part of the standard Minnesota auto insurance policy that protects you if an uninsured at-fault driver hits you and you are injured. It is important following an accident to file a police report and also gather as much information on the other driver as possible. Under most Minnesota car insurance policies you have a duty to find out the basic information of the other driver including their name, address, vehicle information including license plate number. If you fail to get this information at the accident scene it can be difficult to prove whether or not the other driver did or did not have insurance.
Hit-and-Run Accidents
In accidents involving a hit-and-run driver, you often will have little to no information on the other vehicle or driver that caused the accident. Immediately following the accident it is important to file a police report and if you are able to write down any license plate information that will help track down the vehicle’s owner. Minnesota uninsured motorist coverage on your own auto insurance policy also provides protection for these types of accidents if you suffered injuries.
